Goodbye My Friend

A friend of mine from high school committed suicide this week. She is the second person from my relatively small group of high school friends to commit suicide.

All I can think of is why, how and what? Why would a person consider suicide? How could they get that low and what could we have done to prevent it?

Goodbye

Of course we cannot begin to comprehend the answers to these questions unless we have been in such a dark place ourselves. I thank the Lord I haven’t, but if I had, would I be better able to help people in similar situations?

All I can take from this experience is that we have to let our lights shine brighter in hope that our light will give others hope. Maybe our light will draw the hurting to us or give us a platform from which to speak into their lives.

I hope I never fail to make the time to spend with someone who is hurting. We’ll probably never know how bad someone is hurting, but if we even catch a glimpse of their pain we’ve got to be there for them. You never know how low they may be.

I’ve got to slow down, make more time for the only thing that matters in this world – people. I’ve got to let my light shine brighter so that others might see something they like in my life and I can point them to my source.

I saw this video on Facebook this morning and found it inspiring. It inspired me to live a life that might inspire others. I hope it will do the same for you.

Have you ever lost someone to suicide? Have you ever helped someone through depression and have some advice for the rest of us? Please leave a comment in the blog.
