Christian Business Excellence – Is it Worth It?

In our last post, we defined Christian Business Excellence. In summary, we define Christian Business Excellence as a follower of Christ (Christian), planning to make a profit by serving their customers (Business), on the journey to always provide a superior product or service and experience (Excellence).

“Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.” Jesus – Matthew 5:48

“Gentlemen, we are going to relentlessly chase perfection, knowing full well we will not catch it, because nothing is perfect. But we are going to relentlessly chase it, because in the process we will catch excellence. I am not remotely interested in just being good.”  – Vince Lombardi

“The pursuit of perfection, then, is the pursuit of sweetness and light…He who works for sweetness and light united, works to make reason and the will of God prevail.” – Matthew Arnold

Does that sound like you? If not, are you interested in giving it a shot?

Let me see if can convince you why seeking Christian Business Excellence is worth the journey.

1 – It deepens our walk with Christ – Anything that challenges us should drive us to God. Sometimes it is only when we reach the end of us that we truly reach for God. When things are just sailing along smoothly we can get the mistaken impression that we are the reason things are that way.

God puts challenges in our life for the same reason he gave us the Law – to show us how incapable we are of doing this life on our own.

And putting yourself out there as a Christian business leader who is striving for excellence will be a challenge! You’ll have to defend your faith constantly and you’ll have to take your business (division, team) to a level that it has probably never seen before.

This challenge will require the best of you and your people. It will also require God. You will learn to depend on Him like never before on this journey.

2 – It’s Easier – I know this contradicts my last statement, but it is true. Leading or managing a “values driven” driven business focused on big goals and excellence becomes far easier and more enjoyable than running an “average” business.

Think about it. An average business with average goals attracts what kind of people? Yep – average. How fun is it to manage average employees who are tasked with “just getting the job done?” It can be miserable.

Now counter that image with a business that stands by, lives out, hires and fires by its core values – always preserving its amazing culture with every hire it makes. That business has a BIG VISION to make a dent in the universe by being incredibly good at what it does.

What kind of people do you think you’ll attract? If you point those amazing people in the direction of your big vision, how much “managing” will they need? Very little.

Getting the flywheel turning in the direction of Christian Business Excellence will be very difficult. Team members will have to acquire new skills and capabilities or move on. Much growth will be required of you as leader as well. But once that flywheel starts to turn – watch out. Things will get much better, quickly!

3 – It Draws People to Christ – People who would never grace the steps of a church can be reached by your business. Nobody has to go to church, but almost all of us have to go to work. As you build your amazing business, the light that your business shines will grow ever brighter. That light will attract lots of great people – plenty that don’t know Christ or at least have never seen serving Him put into practice the way you do as a leader.

Billy Graham said that “the next great move of Christ will be in the marketplace” and you can see why. As Christian business leaders we have the opportunity to reach people the traditional church could never touch, we can go into countries where the church is not allowed. Since our team will be watching us daily, we can show them a level of Christian authenticity that they may have never seen.

4 – It’s Profitable – Chasing excellence and leading a business in a way that aligns with your values and why God put you on this earth will allow you to lead at a level you’ve never led at. It will also attract great people. Great people led by great leaders chasing an inspiring vision make customers very happy. Happy customers are profitable customers. Say goodbye to competing solely on price. Your customers will love you.

I could go on, but I hope those 4 reasons to chase Christian Business Excellence have inspired you to give it a shot.

Helping Christian business leaders build excellent businesses is what we are focused on. We’d love to have you join us on this journey.
