The Hoyts

“Our chief want is someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be.”

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson.

This is a story that has inspired me from the first time I saw it. I’ll give you some background on this amazing father and son, but to get the full impact on this family’s inspirational journey, you need to watch the video below. Play it anytime you need a little inspiration and I promise you that it will deliver.

The Hoyts

Rick Hoyt was born in 1962 with severe cerebral palsy. In 1975, Rick asked his father if he would run a local road race with him to benefit a lacrosse player that had been paralyzed in an accident. He said yes and they finished 2nd to last.

Since that time the Hoyts have finished over 200 triathlons, 6 of which were the Ironman distance. If you are not familiar with the Ironman, it is one of the world’s most grueling races. It consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike race and a 26.2 mile run. To complete the race, Dick pulls Rick behind him in an inflatable boat, then places him on the front of his specially designed bike and finally pushes him in his wheel chair for the final 26.2 miles.

And, they’ve completed over 60 marathons, over 1,000 races in total.

The Hoyts are Bostonians and the Boston Marathon has always held a special place in their heart. The 2013 Boston Marathon was to be their last long distance race. Since this year’s race was devastated by the terrible terrorist bombing, the Hoyts have decided to run the race again in 2014 in honor of those who lost their lives and were injured in the attacks.

The Hoyts are an amazing example of inspiration, determination and persistence. I pray that you and that each of us, even today, will find something that inspires us the way Dick Hoyt was inspired to race with his son. God Bless!
