10 Reasons People Resist Change – Leadership is about driving change, but change is almost always met with resistance. Your best chance of successfully implementing change is to understand the primary causes of resistance and create strategies to overcome each. Here are the top 10 from a great HBR article by Rosabeth Kanter:
- Loss of Control – Leave room for your people to make choices.
- Excess Uncertainty – Eliminate uncertainty through clear, detailed communication.
- Surprise, Surprise! – Get people involved in change early, don’t surprise them.
- Everything Seems Different – Change only what must change. We love routines.
- Loss of Face – Find victories in the past to help others save face. Also, learn to celebrate well intended failures as valiant efforts in the right direction.
- Concerns about Competence – Face the fact that everyone faces insecurities about their abilities. Always be lifting up, training and supporting.
- More Work – Change is always more work. What can people “stop doing” to make room for the change in their workloads?
- Ripple Effects – The effects of change travel a great distance to all departments and customers. Bring all stakeholders into the discussion.
- Past Resentments – Don’t leave any past hurts. They will always arise when you need relationship capital to make change happen. Make the time to recover the relationship before you need it.
- The Hurt is Real – Sometimes change is really hard when it involves loss of jobs and displacement. Be clear, honest, and provide support. Don’t sugar coat it and be forced to follow up with additional bad news later.
Emotional Intelligence @ Work – EI is defined as “the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.” EI drives how likeable you are when you interact with the others.
Studies show that “at best, IQ contributes about 20% to the factors that determine success, which leaves 80% to other forces; these forces are Emotional Intelligence.”
EI also drives how your “brand” is perceived when your customers interact with your employees. Starbucks realizes that they cannot charge $5 for just a latte. You Are 25 Times More Likely to Be Shot to Death in America – Say what? Caught my eye too! Straight from a study by the World Health Organization. Apparently we are only 7 times more likely to be killed, it’s the being killed by guns that we appear to excel at. For 15 to 24 year olds, the gun homicide rate is 49 times higher! These numbers compare the U.S. to the 23 other highest income countries with a population greater than 1 million.
