Make Your New Year Balanced!
Ahh… New Year’s. The time when I get to annoy my wife with our annual goal setting sessions! I don’t think it is the goal setting that bothers her as much as the fact that I generally bring the topic up on New Year’s Eve. I think she feels there are better things to do on New Year’s Eve! I’m sure I will do better this year!
It is proven that we are all terrible at achieving the goals we set each year. That is mostly because of three problems with traditional goal setting.
- We set too many goals.
- We set our goals too high.
- Our goals push our life out of balance.
Change is hard, which is why reason #1 and #2 are very important. Our willpower has limits, so we need to focus it on the change that will make the biggest positive difference in the quality of our life. Committing to huge changes generally leads to failure. It is proven that small habit changes are what leads to accomplishing big goals over time.
Goal accomplishment is all about creating a better life for ourselves, our loved ones and the world. That is why I recommend you take a holistic look at your life before you start setting goals this year. A great tool to do this is called “The Wheel of Life.” This tool will help you take a balanced approach to your goal setting. What good is it for me to make a ton of money if I lose the ones I love in the process? I could spend all my time getting in great shape next year and neglect my career. It works for professional triathletes, but I just don’t think I’ve got that kind of talent. Time is a finite resource. When we re-allocate a lot of it to achieving a new goal, we are taking time away from something else.
The Wheel of Life allows you to take a look at how you are performing in the life areas that matter most to you. If one area gets too far out of whack, it will drag down the other areas. For example, if you let your health get too far gone your health will begin to drag down your performance in other areas of your life.
I put an excel based Wheel of Life model in my “Get 5 Hours Back” resource. You can check it out by clicking the image below or by going to our Subscriber Resource Library. There is even a video that shows you how to use it. Once you get to the Library, click on “Get 5 Hours Back” and you’ll see everything you need.
I hope this helps you to set and achieve the goals that will have the biggest positive impact on your life in 2017!
