Drive by Compliments

How many people do you compliment in a day?

How many people smile because of interacting with you each day?

Is the number kinda small? Why?

Most of us are pretty terrible at giving compliments. We assume that people will think we are not authentic or just plain weird. I mean – how many strangers give you compliments each day?

Most people are self-conscious and would prefer to go unnoticed in public. Giving compliments draws attention to you and could solicit a negative response. This potential for conflict scares most people away from interacting with strangers in even the smallest way.

I want you to challenge those assumptions and fears about talking to strangers and giving them a compliment. Think about the last time you received a compliment. Did you question the complimentors’ integrity or did you just smile and say thank you? Did you walk a little taller for just a few minutes after the encounter? I do.

I’ll believe anything positive that you tell me about myself. Heck – you can tell me that I have six-pack abs and I’ll go look in the mirror just to check (Clarification – I am nowhere close to having six pack unless you count the six pack of diet mountain dews I might be carrying at the check-out line).

Here is how one guy is bringing a smile to stranger’s faces.

Blake Grigsby, a 20-year old student studying digital cinema at DePaul University, decided to run a social experiment to see how people would handle random compliments from strangers. The experiment involved Grigsby and a friend driving around the Lincoln Park area of Chicago yelling random compliments to complete strangers.

Were the strangers offended? Nope. Most just smiled and said thank you. They probably all had at least a slightly better day after their very brief encounter with Grigsby.

So – what are you doing to brighten someone’s day today? How are you bringing a smile to someone’s face?

Start counting and see how many people you can cause to smile today!
